The Pressures of Individual Wealth, A Public Profile Or Organisational Seniority

As I have said before trust is one of the fundamental requirements when it comes to mental health and well being treatment. There is no getting around the fact that chronic distrust can affect how individuals view themselves and all their relationships in their lives.

Many of us have trust issues but for those with a very public profile or high levels of business seniority it adds an additional layer and can make it even more difficult for these people to trust others and form authentic connections. This can lead to mental health struggles, and some people in the public eye have spoken publicly about their experiences with trust issues:

Millie Bobby Brown - The Stranger Things star has said that growing up as a child actor in the spotlight has led to trust issues. She told Glamour that she blocks out a lot of people and that commenting on children's behaviour and appearance can stunt their growth.

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly - In March 2024, Elle reported that the couple, who became engaged in 2022, have been struggling with trust issues and have called off their wedding. A source told People that the couple has "tons of trust issues".

Katy Perry - In August 2020, Perry spoke with Apple Music's Zane Lowe about her struggles with depression and self-doubt.

Other factors that can contribute to trust issues with individuals in the public eye and high levels of seniority include:

Isolation - many have difficulty participating in everyday activities without attracting attention.

Pressure to maintain an image - many may feel pressure to maintain a perfect image, which can lead to feelings of alienation. The advent of social media certainly does not aid in this.

Identity crisis - lines can easily be blurred between an individual’s public persona and their real identity, which can lead to an identity crisis and create several mental health issues.

Public scrutiny – if you are in the public eye every move is constantly being watched by the public and in many cases commented on publicly. This constant scrutiny can lead to feelings of vulnerability and anxiety affecting self-esteem and overall mental well-being.

With many public profile individuals also comes individual wealth which brings forth other trust issues in areas of their lives, including relationships:

Relationships - wealth can attract people who are only interested in money, making it difficult to know who to trust. It can also create power dynamics in relationships, especially romantic ones. People of wealth may have trouble finding people who love them for who they are, rather than their wealth. They may also worry about whether their relationships are genuine, and it is not uncommon for “loyalty test stories” to be deliberately planted to see if they surface.

CEOs face many pressures, including relentless expectations and demands, which can lead to burnout. In 2023, a record number of CEOs left their positions, and 19 died while in office. According to a Deloitte and Workplace Intelligence survey, 75% of C-suite executives are considering quitting their jobs for better well-being support.

The mental health impact for those in positions of power, for those with individual wealth and being in the public eye can, and often is, huge with many turning to a range of coping mechanisms including alcohol and drugs. So, is it any wonder with all these trust issues that these people are unlikely to come into traditional treatment with others, and even if they do, can they really be expected too fully open up?
